For those who liked the PBS Woodturning videos by Tim Yoder, Woodturning Workshop, He is now teaming up with Popular Woodworking and producing videos again.  They are free to watch on your computer and can be found at : www.popularwoodworking.com/woodturning.  There are now 6 videos that you can watch on Popular Woodworking's website.

Think About Turning Today!

August 2014, Presidentís Message:

August is our busiest month of the year! So here is the busy schedule for August.

August 2 (Sunday): 10:00 set up at the Montana Fair Hobby Hall

August 6: 7:00 Regular meeting

August 9-16 (noon to 9 PM): Montana Fair and our demonstration daily at the Hobby Hall

August 21 (Thursday): Presentation at noon at the Western Heritage Museum. The presentation will be filmed and be put in the Museum library for anyone to view in the future.

August 22 (Friday at 4:00): Set up at Roaring 20ís Club House for Symposium 9

August 23-24 (Saturday and Sunday 9 to 4): Symposium 9 with Kip Christensen

The more participation by members, the better and easier this month will be. And the more fun all of us will have. Thank you for being so generous with your time.

Donít forget to pay your registration fee for the Symposium. It is $85 if paid by August 9. It then goes up to $100. Since we will have our regular meeting on the 6th of August you can pay it then. Great!

Minutes (Wednesday, July 9, 2014 Meeting)

Officers: Dr. Van, Martin, Stan, Nick, Ron

Call for Guests: No guest for July meeting.

Health Reports:

Correspondence: Dr Van had a call from a man that asked him if we could make some turnings from wood out of his back yard so he could give them to his kids. Dr Van told him we would, so Jerry Gipe made several lidded boxes for him.

Show and Tell: July Challenge (Bowls)

Dr Van: A bowl made from Maple, finish unknown.

Dave Torrence: A bowl made from Honey Locus, finish unknown.

Jerry Gipe: A bowl, kind of wood and finish unknown.

Dale Molyneaux: 2 bowls, one made from oak and one made from a wood with worm holes,

finish on both was Paul's mix.

Dan Vabderhoof: A bowl made from Apricot with a tung oil finish.

Gary Levine: A bowl made from Pine burl with a walnut oil finish.

Good participation this month. There was a vote by the members on the bowl they liked the most and first was Gary Levine, second was Dan Vanderhoof, third was Jerry Gipe.

Other show and tell:

Dr Van: Brought a lidded box made from Maple, finish unknown.

Ron Velin: Brought a birdhouse made from Russian Olive and Cedar and lidded box made from Maple with a turquoise inlay.

Gary Levine: Brought predator call made from Maple burl with a linseed oil finish.

Treasurerís report: We made a good profit from our last month's George Oliver training session. We also had 6 members pay for their Symposium registration. We still carry a good balance. If you have any questions, call Martin.

New Business:

Gathering wood: We got some more local Walnut donated and Stan waxed it and is storing it.

Soliciting new members

Nothing new to report.

Interment of Veteran cremains at Laurel National Veterans Cemetery Saturday July 26 at 11:00 AM and we would like to have as many members there as possible because they are using 9 of our urns for the Missing in America

Project (a veteran recovery project) Please come and show your support. We have been recognized, (congratulations)

Hands On Workshops

Montana Fair August 8-16, 2014 (July meeting will be to line up Fair demo Hobby Hall) A signup sheet was handed out and members started signing to cover the different time slots. They are not all covered so if you could cover some of slots it sure would be appreciated. The setup day is August 6, so if you can help call Dr Van.

Western Heritage Museum: August 21, presentation and filming 45 minute presentation with lathe present and finished items to stay at Museum and be seen by visitors.

Kip W. Christensen

Kip W. Christensen, PhD, is a professor in the School of Technology at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. He is also an accomplished and well-known woodturner. His work has been published in over 20 books and in a variety of magazines and journals, and displayed in many galleries and international juried exhibitions. He has given over 150 national and several international presentations. Gallery curator and author Kevin Wallace wrote "The work of Kip Christensen is always aesthetically pure and technically precise". And he has a unique ability to speak and communicate with the average turner.
