Think About Turning Today!

March 2013 President’s Message:

Having a midi-lathe at our meetings is revolutionizing our presentations. So far presentations by Ed Auker (January) and Chris Simonsen (February) have been excellent… and I am getting the reports from members that we are having the “best meetings yet!”

March Meeting Presentation:

Don’t miss the March meeting. Darrin Reimann will turn a pen and instruct us on “how it is done using inexpensive assembly devices.”

Plans for the Yellowstone Woodturners Symposium 8 are taking shape. The date is September 28-29 with Rex Burningham (UT) as the demonstrator. His two day demonstration will introduce turners to “Carbide Tools, How to Select and Use Them” and “Wood Turned Wall Hangings.”

Our urn project is getting real traction. We now have approximately 18 completed urns with a goal of turning 36 of them. That means that we are half way there. Thanks to a generous donation of wood by Home Depot, A & H Turf, and Intermountain Wood Products, we are getting closer to completing our journey.

“Good Guy Salute” to four of our members (Jerry Gipe, Dan Vanderhoof, Martin Robinson, and George Hoffman) for turning out at Nick Enslander’s shop to help him set up his new lathe. Also members are helping Nick learn to turn with his handicap. He is confined to a wheelchair. What a neat learning experience for all of us.

We received a nice “thank you” from the Parmly Library for our appearance there to demonstrate turning. They hope that we will consider returning to the Library at a later date.

A Message From Members

Hi Guys,

I hope all is going well with all of you. I just wanted to give you all a heads up that we're having another symposium this year and it will feature Mike Mahoney. It's been several years since he was in Billings at the Yellowstone Woodturners Symposium, so I talked him into coming back to Montana this year. We don't have all the details ironed out yet, like cost and a few other things, but it's going to be September 21 & 22. I'm the chairman and I plan to get something set up with one of the hotels and Dick's RV Park for people to stay at a discount. I'm sure some of our members would be happy to have guests stay with them also. It'll be pretty much the same program as always - lunch, door prizes, auction, dinner somewhere Saturday night, etc. I hope some of you guys who would like to see Mike again, or who haven't seen him before, will come over and visit us again. I'd appreciate if you would pass this info along to the rest of your members, and when I get all the particulars together I will send it to you.

Thanks, Barry Rockwell Great Falls Woodturners
