Minutes (Wednesday, March 11, 2015 Meeting)
Officers: Ron, Leona, Stan, Nick
Call for Guests:
Cookies by: Dave Torrence/ Cake & ice cream instead for “Dr Van's 75th
Show and Tell: March challenge any plate,platter,bowl etc. with some
kind of embellishment on it.
Ron Velin: Made a platter from Poplar wood with gold leaf overlay, kind of
Dr Van: Made a raised rim bowl, kind of wood and finish unknown.
Ralph Torrence: Brought a panel truck and a nataraja piece made from a lot of
different woods, kind of finish unknown.
Dan Vanderhoof: Made a cribbage board from Birch with a lazier cut
embellishment on it, finished with Paul's mix.
Dale Molyneaux: Made a plate from Norway Pine with a lacquer finish and a
plate made from a combination of Box Elder and Walnut with a lacquer finish.
Stan Lambert: Made a platter from Oak with a finish using Paul's mix.
Nick Emslander: Made a platter bowl combination from Cottonwood burl with a
Ellis Wyman: Made a plate, kind of wood and finish unknown.
Jerry Gipe: Made a potpourri bowl made from Black Oak, Plywood and ?, finish
Roger Hust: Made a segmented plate and bowl from Oak, Ash and Poplar with a
clear poly finish.
Other show and tell:
Jerry Gipe: Brought a display case that he and Phil Scott made for metals
that a friend of his won. This friend was a teacher of his which he also bowls
with and he recently broke his neck.
Dr Van: Brought a segmented bowl kind of wood and finish unknown.
Dan Vanderhoof: Brought a natural edge bowl made from Black Cottonwood with a
tung oil finish and a candy bowl made from Walnut with a CA glue finish.
San Lambert: Brought a 14” bowl made from ?/Maple burl with a Paul's mix
Andrew Bishop: Brought a table made from Russian Olive and Ash unfinished.
Martin Robinson: Brought a art piece that he got at the Woodturners National
Symposium that was made from Sycamore with some pursing with a lacquer finish.
We had a vote on the pieces that we liked the most and there were 5 prizes,
after the vote #1 was Nick Emslander #2 Stan Lambert #3 Dan Vanderhoof #4 Ralph
Torrence #5 Jerry Gipe. We had a great participation.
Treasurer’s report: We have a total of 38 paid members at this time
and we still have good balance. If you have any questions call Leona.
Gathering wood: On going. If you hear of any one that has wood they
want to get rid of or is having trees taken down that are good turning wood,
call Ron Velin.
Soliciting new members: On going
There will be an open work shop some time in April at Stan Lambert's shop.
Hands On Workshops: George Oliver said he will do some Workshops, the
particulars to be worked out when he returns.
2015 Dues are due, remain at $25.
Great Falls Woodturners annual symposium, September 26 & 27 2015, presenter
is Rudy Lopez from Florida (from Barry Rockwell, President)
Yellowstone Woodturners Symposium for 2015... October 17-18 Alan Carter will
be our presenter. Cost if payed by September 9 $ 90.00 Cost if payed after
September 9 $100.00 Cost for one day Saturday or Sunday $ 75.00 Under 18 Free
Includes: lunch, coffee, cookies and snacks.
High School classes: Dan Vanderhoof, Jerry Gipe and Stan Lambert
teaching classes in 2015 and they are the first Wednesday of the month from 2:30
to 5:00 PM. At West High School wood shop. If you would like to go and see what
it is like or teach you may stop by. Jerry told us that they have some really
interested students right now.
Monthly turning challenge: April challenge is to make a walking stick.
My best discovery lately: There was no discovery given at this
